No More Solar or Wind Energy for GreenVille

When Dr. Pollution and Pol’ Tick Al tried to get Petrol City approved, their plan failed.  Dr. Pollution became even more determined to destroy GoGreen Man and GreenVille.  He knew he had to come up with fool-proof plan, one that would shock everyone.

Dr. Pollution went to his secret laboratory to think about ways he could destroy GreenVille.  He had learned his lesson from the election that GreenVille didn't like Pol’ Tick Al and Petrol Pirate's Petrol City proposal.  They especially didn’t like the petro-gasonol power plant proposal (try saying that five times!).  GreenVille didn't like the polluting power plant idea because GreenVille already had energy - that is, clean energy sources like the sun and wind.  If Dr. Pollution wanted to succeed this time, he would have to get rid of their renewable energy sources, so GreenVille would have to depend on him for their energy needs (electricity).

By looking at GreenVille's map, Dr. Pollution calculated when, where and how much wind energy was produced in the different parts of GreenVille.  You see, GreenVille has mountains to the north, east and west.  In the mountain valley is where GreenVille’s wind turbines are located. If Dr. Pollution could somehow block the wind from coming through the valley, the wind turbines (kind of like big windmills) couldn't work.  This would mean no wind energy for GreenVille.

“What can I do to block the wind?  There has to be something I can do,” he muttered to himself.  Dr. Pollution paced his lab trying to think.  “Aha!  I have it! I’ll tie up a curtain at the front of the valley. This would block the wind!  Yes, I believe it will work!” he said triumphantly.   But, how could he do this?  “Hmmm, I think I will have to use my mega robot, the Taxin' Texan.”

The Taxin' Texan was big enough to put up a huge curtain over the front of the valley, because at this time of year, that was where the most wind came from.  It helped that the area was far away from GreenVille, deep into the mountains.  No one would notice what he was doing!

Now that Dr. Pollution figured out how to take care of the wind energy, he now had to find a way to block GreenVille’s of solar energy.   “I know I’ll have to block the sun since that’s where solar energy comes from.  What’s the best way to do this?” Dr. Pollution mulled over what to do. “I will use my most innovative invention, Gas Goon, to cover the sky.  But he isn’t big enough to block the sun, though.”  Dr. Pollution realized he needed a lot more gas to make Gas Goon big enough to cover the sky over GreenVille.  He had created him in his lab with only a limited amount of gas.

It wasn’t long before Dr. Pollution thought of a way to make Gas Goon bigger.  “I will go to GreenVille's Recycle Plant and burn the pile of unsorted recyclables.  Roger Recycle always has mountains of aluminum cans, plastic bottles and jugs waiting to be recycled!  HA! HA! HA!  This will work great!”  Dr. Pollution was very full of himself, “Who can think of such great ideas, but me?  I am the smartest man.  HA! Who can think of stopping the wind and covering the sun?  Only I, the great scientist named Dr. Pollution.”

Dr. Pollution wanted his plan to be carried out in thirteen days.  The citizens of GreenVille, including GoGreen Man, had no idea what was going to happen to them.  Without solar or wind energy, all of GreenVille would be shut down - even the schools and hospitals!

GreenVille had made the switch to renewable energy because there had been a really bad pollution problem before.  Gas and oil used to be the only things use to make electricity before King Nature became king.  He made strong rules to stop pollution and prevent it from happening again in GreenVille.  That’s also when the recycling and conservation program began.

As a result of all these changes, some of the conveniences people were used to had to go.  Fortunately, most citizens didn’t mind.  They felt it was a small sacrifice for the greater good of GreenVille.

But this is why Dr. Pollution was trying to attack the renewable energy sources in order to bring back fossil fuels (oil, gas/petrol).  He wanted to bring back the former polluted glory of GreenVille.

Once the sun and wind in GreenVille were blocked, then everyone in GreenVille would see the need for a petro-gasonol power plant.

Oblivious to Dr. Pollution’s plans, GoGreen Man was checking on GreenVille’s solar panel and wind farms.  Actually, he was thinking about how the sun was shining and the wind was blowing.  It was so peaceful and he was glad to be the protector of GreenVille.  He really wished it would stay like this all the time.

On his way back from the renewable energy farms, GoGreen Man saw Roger Recycle.

“Hi, GoGreen Man, isn’t today a wonderful day?  It’s a perfect day for recycling!” Roger called out.

GoGreen Man agreed, “It is indeed a beautiful day.  By the way how is the recycling program going?”

“It’s going great!  People are really serious about it and I have piles of plastic to be processed,” Roger Recycle enthusiastically replied.

“That’s good to hear.  I’ll come by to see you sometime,” said GoGreen Man.

“GoGreen Man, you are a hero in GreenVille and as a result are always welcome in my recycling plant!” laughed Roger Recycle.

Petrol Pirate asked Pol’ Tick Al, “Have you heard from Dr. Pollution recently?”

“No, as a matter of fact I haven’t,” responded Pol’ Tick Al, surprised at the realization. “We need to go check on him.  Maybe he has a new plan we can help him carry out.  Let’s go see what he’s doing.”

When they showed up at Dr. Pollution’s lab, he was busy organizing his attack on GreenVille.

“Good timing,” Dr. Pollution called out.  “I need your help right now.”

“What can we do for you,” responded Pol’ Tick Al.

“We couldn’t build Petrol City because GreenVille uses renewable energy.  If there is no renewable energy, then they will need to build a petro-gasonol power plant.  Once we have the power plant, we can build Petrol City and they will have to rely on us,” Dr. Pollution told them.

Pol’ Tick Al and Petrol Pirate couldn’t understand how Dr. Pollution could stop the wind and solar energy.  Dr. Pollution laughed at their confusion, “Ha, ha, ha!  I am a great scientist.  Nothing is too hard or impossible for me!  I will block the sun and wind in GreenVille, just you wait and see.”  He then went on to explain exactly how it would happen.

The men were amazed at Dr. Pollution’s creativity and wanted to help carry out his plan.

“I need a huge amount of nylocone from your factory.  It’s the only fabric I can think of that can handle the strong winds for my wind dam,” Dr. Pollution told Petrol Pirate. “Plus, I need a lot of gasoline to start the fire at the recycle plant.”

Petrol Pirate told him there would be no problem, “My factory can handle the nylocone and I have plenty of gasoline – especially since it’s not used much in GreenVille anymore.”

Dr. Pollution told Pol’ Tick Al, “I don’t need to tell you what to do when the sun and wind disappear from GreenVille, right?”

Pol’ Tick Al smugly replied, “I know exactly what to do.  I will put a lot of pressure on King Nature to build the petro-gasonol power plant.  It will be my pleasure to see GreenVille’s citizens begging for electricity.”  He laughed at the idea of it.

***

The thirteenth day finally arrived and Dr. Pollution put his plan into action.  To block the wind, he ordered his mega robot, Taxin' Texan, to go deep into the mountains where put up the huge nylocone curtain.

After receiving his orders, Taxin’ Texan went straight into the mountains.  In order to avoid being seen, he left at night to make the long hike into the mountains.  When the sun was just rising over the mountaintops, Taxin’ Texan arrived at his destination.  He successfully put up the curtain and immediately the wind was trapped.  The nylocone was holding up well.  The wind dam was working according to plan!

Shortly after the wind dam was put up, the wind turbines on the other side of the valley were slowing down until they completely stopped spinning.   The workers were arriving at the wind farm, when they noticed all the turbines had stopped spinning.  They went to the control room to see what was going on where they saw the monitors were reporting no wind activity.  This was completely abnormal, so they immediately called GoGreen Man to tell him that for some reason there was no more wind to power the turbines.  This was shocking to GoGreen Man because GreenVille never had a problem like this before.   He told them he would be there as soon as he could.

After Dr. Pollution saw there was no wind in the air, he knew it was time to get out Gas Goon.  If it was windy, then Gas Goon would be blown away.  It would have been almost impossible for him to stay in one place and block the sun.   Dr. Pollution then ordered his Trashinator 2000 (an evil robot) to use its gas nozzle on the recycled materials at the Recycle Plant.

While the enormous piles of plastic and paper (and petrol from the Trashinator 2000) were burning, a huge cloud of toxic smoke rose into the air.  This was just what Dr. Pollution needed and he sent his Gas Goon to suck up all the smoke.

Dr. Pollution got a little excited at how well everything was going.  “Go Gas Goon, suck up all the smoke you want.  After you get it, spread out in the sky over GreenVille until you completely block the solar rays.”  It was kind of like Gas Goon was at an all-you-can-eat buffet because the more smoke he "ate" the fatter he became.

***

In the meantime, while GoGreen Man was on his way to investigate the wind problem, he saw a dark cloud in the sky that was getting larger and larger.  “What’s going on over there?  Are those rain clouds? No, they can’t be – there’s no wind and it looks different.  Besides it’s in one spot.” GoGreen Man started to watch it but soon became alarmed. “It looks like a fire.  Is that near the recycle plant?”   A short while later the cloud had covered all the sky over GreenVille.   GoGreen Man became worried, “Oh no!  GreenVille is getting darker and darker. With no sunlight, there will be no solar energy for GreenVille.  We need the sun, especially now with the wind turbines down.  I need to go check on Roger Recycle.”

***

Roger Recycle was stunned when he saw the flames shooting into the air.  He made a frantic call to GoGreen Man because all the things that had been recycled were burning up.

“GoGreen Man!  This is Roger Recycle.  There’s a huge fire in my recycle stack.  I tried to put it out but it’s too big for me and the fire department.  My entire mountain of recycled plastic is burning.  I really need your help – please hurry!” cried out a frantic Roger Recycle.

GoGreen Man went as fast as he could to Roger Recycle’s plant.  When he got there he was amazed at what he saw (and smelled).  The entire pile of recyclables was on fire and he smelled the very distinct odor of gas fumes.

“GoGreen Man!” cried out Roger Recycle.  “What can we do?  The firemen say they don’t have enough water and they need help!”

With the size of the fire, GoGreen Man knew they needed a LOT of water.  He knew exactly who could help him get the fire out, his friend Water Woman.

“Don’t worry Roger Recycle, I’m going to get my GreenCopter and bring some water to help put out the fire.” GoGreen Man left to get his Greenopter and then went to ask Water Woman for her help since she was an expert on water.

“Water Woman,” called out GoGreen Man when he arrived. “Do you see the smoke over there covering the sky?  It’s from a fire at the recycle plant.” He said, pointing behind him.

“Oh, no!” she exclaimed. “How can I help you?”

“I need the biggest sprinkler you have.  Can I use it to help Roger Recycle?” he asked.

Water Woman was glad to help and rushed to get her best sprinkler.

In all of GreenVille, Water Woman always had the biggest water sprinkler (remember, her garden is made out of water and she waters it with water!).   With Water Woman's water, her sprinkler and his Greencopter, GoGreen Man went to go help put out the fire.

When he got close to the fire, GoGreen Man put one end of the sprinkler in a nearby lake and connected the other end to his Greencopter.  With the hose attached, he was able to continually spray huge amounts of water onto the fire.  It worked perfectly!  In no time the fire was out, thanks to Water Woman’s sprinkler.

***

The fire was out, but it was too late to stop Gas Goon from covering the sky.  With no wind blowing, the smoke (Gas Goon, but GoGreen Man didn’t know that) wasn’t going away.  As a result, it was unusually dark in GreenVille, even though it was supposed to bethe  middle of the day.  Street lights were on and people had to use headlights when they drove.

GoGreen Man wanted to investigate the fire, but before he could get started he got another call from the GreenVille Renewable Energy Office.  They told him that GreenVille was not receiving any wind energy and had now lost its solar energy.  Pretty soon, the emergency backup system would be activated to keep GreenVille with electricity.   This bothered GoGreen Man because he knew the backup power only lasted a short amount of time.

“Why is this happening?  I don’t know what is going on today!” GoGreen Man was really puzzled by the fire and the loss of solar and wind energy.  It happened too suddenly to be a coincidence.

***

By now, even King Nature, ruler of GreenVille had heard about the fire and the solar and wind problems.  He called an emergency meeting to find out what was going on.  GoGreen Man, Professor Fusionstein and Pol’ Tick Al along with many other officials came the meeting ready to discuss solutions.

“GoGreen Man, as the person in charge of renewable energy in GreenVille,” said King Nature. “Would you tell us what is going on?”

“King Nature, this morning I was told there was no wind turning the turbines,” started GoGreen Man.  “While on my way to investigate, I was called by Roger Recycle to come help put out a fire.  The fire was very strong and needed a lot of water to be put out.  Because it was a mountain of plastic and paper that went up in flames, it generated a lot of smoke.  With no wind to push the smoke out of GreenVille, it has stayed in place.  Therefore, we are without solar energy as well.  The backup system for GreenVille is now operating.”

Interrupting him, King Nature asked, “Do you know who did this?”

GoGreen Man told him he had suspicions, but no proof.

Pol’ Tick Al haughtily asked, “GoGreen Man, do you not know what will happen to us if we don’t have electricity?  Our society will shut down.  The schools, hospitals, restaurants - everything will be closed.  This is exactly why I’ve been a supporter of the petro-gasonol power plant.  I’ve been worried about something like this happening for a while now.”

King Nature interrupted before GoGreen Man could reply, “GoGreen Man, how much power do we have?  How long will the back up system last?”

Hesitantly, GoGreen Man answered, “The backup system should last approximately three days.”

There was a collective gasp throughout the room.

Pol’ Tick Al demanded, “You have to have a solution within those three days or this whole mess will be on your shoulders.  If you can’t, then the petro-gasonol power plant will be built in GreenVille.  We can’t worry about something like this happening again.”

Turning to King Nature, he continued, “King Nature, I respectfully request GoGreen Man be removed from his office if he has not found a solution within the next three days.”

Sadly, King Nature couldn’t disagree with Pol’ Tick Al because this was a very serious problem.  He turned to asked Professor Fusionstein, “Do you know of anything we can do?  Are there any solutions to these problems?”

Professor Fusionstein took a moment to think before answering King Nature.  After a short pause, he replied, “Unfortunately, I don’t have any answers for you right now.   I will do all I can to help GoGreen Man and think of some new backup renewable energy sources.

It was a very subdued group who left the meeting.  Everyone had hope for better news, but they were left disappointed and worried.  That is, everyone except Pol’ Tick Al.  He was the only one who knew Dr. Pollution was behind all the problems in GreenVille.  Happy to have a chance to get rid of GoGreen Man, Pol’ Tick Al whistled on his way out of the meeting.

Determined to solve the renewable energy problem, GoGreen Man talked to Professor Fusionstein, hoping he some ideas he didn’t mention in the meeting.   “Professor Fusionstein, do you have anything in mind?” he asked.

“This is very ususual.  This time of year the wind should be very strong.  It makes no sense for it to completely stop,” said a very puzzled Professor Fusionstein.  “Also, a fire at the recycle plant?  It wouldn’t happen by itself.  Plastic just doesn’t spontaneously combust (start by itself).”

“About the fire,” said GoGreen Man. “I smelled gasoline.  I know for sure that Roger Recycle wouldn’t do something like that, so it means someone started it.  I really suspect Dr. Pollution, but I have no proof.”

Professor Fusionstein agreed that it was probably the work of Dr. Pollution, but told GoGreen Man, “We need to get the solar and wind energy back because if we don’t, there will be chaos in GreenVille.”

“I’m going to try using my wind energizer to see if it will help blow the smoke away,” said GoGreen Man. “I hope it works.”

Professor Fusionstein told him, “I have an idea for renewable energy that I’ve been working on, but I didn’t want to bring itup in the meeting.  After I work on it a little more I’m going to present it to the king.”

***

Dr. Pollution was thrilled with the mess he’d created and was laughing with Petrol Pirate. “Look at this,” he laughed with glee while watching news reports on GVTN. “Gas Goon is covering GreenVille making it like nighttime.  It’s all because of me, a genius scientist!”

Petrol Pirate thought Dr. Pollution was brilliant. “You are a genius,” he said in awe.  “Your plans have worked out just the way you said they would.”

Dr. Pollution then told Petrol Pirate that to start working on the petro-gasonol plant.  “Pretty soon they will beg you to build it. HA! HA! HA! HA!”

***

GoGreen Man was struggling to get rid of Gas Goon.  He’d brought out his wind energizer mobile unit and turned it on, but it wouldn’t work.  The smoke would blow away a little, but would come right back to where it had been – it never left the sky over GreenVille.  “That’s odd.  This isn’t acting like smoke, its acting like it’s alive.  What’s going on here?”  GoGreen Man was stunned.  He’d never seen smoke act like this before.  Determined not to give up though, GoGreen Man kept using his wind energizer in the hopes the cloud of smoke would weaken and blow away.

Professor Fusionstein was furiously working in his lab on an idea for GreenVille's back up energy system.  He had always been intrigued by bubbles and wondered if they could be an energy source.

Instead of blowing bubbles to watch them float in the sky, these bubbles would be an energy source in water.  You know, when bubbles are in water (or any liquid) they try to get to the top.  While they are moving up, they have power (force) that is pushing them up.  By using that force, Professor Fusionstein thought he could get it to turn water turbines (like a pinwheel only with bubbles in water, not air).  The spinning of the turbines would then generate electricity.

The idea had great potential, so Professor Fusionstein named it the Bubble E. Factory.  When he felt it was ready to be presented, he called Hannah Heart to see if she could take it to King Nature.

“Hannah Heart,” said Professor Fusionstein. “I was wondering if you could do something for me.”

“Sure, Professor Fusionstein!” replied Hannah Heart.  She was always glad to help him. “What can I do for you?”

“I’m working on a project right now, but I need someone to take a proposal to King Nature.  I don’t have time, because I really need to work on this renewable energy project.”

Hannah Heart took the proposal to King Nature and when he saw it, he was delighted.  He thought it was really innovative, but told her there wasn't enough time to build it before GreenVille’s electricity ran out.

“I really hope GoGreen Man can solve the electricity problems by figuring out how to get our solar and wind energy back. If he does, this Bubble E. Factory is a great back up plan that should work well for us.  It’s exactly the kind of thing I like to see,” said King Nature, praising Professor Fusionstein’s innovative work.

GoGreen Man still wasn't able to defeat Gas Goon and realized he couldn't get rid of it on his own.  Not only that, the cloud of smoke was shooting electric charges.  They were like lightening, but were directed at him!

Because of this, GoGreen Man decided to ask for help from GreenVille's citizens.  He went to make an announcement on GVTN (GreenVille Television Network).  He asked the listeners to call him if anyone saw anything that might be related to the fire or lack of wind.

Pretty soon, GoGreen Man received a phone call from backpackers who told him that they remembered seeing a huge robot walking in the woods carrying something.  They thought it was strange a robot was in the woods so far in the mountains and thought he should know about it.

GoGreen Man wondered why a huge robot would be walking in the mountains.  To satisfy his curiosity and to see if it related to why there was no wind, he quickly went in his Greencoptor deep into the mountains to investigate.  He thought maybe all of GreenVille’s problems could have started in this area.

Deep in the mountains in an area know for its high winds, GoGreen Man saw an amazing sight.  There was a huge curtain that appeared to be blocking the wind (kind of like a water dam, only this one blocks wind).  By the way the curtain was straining, he immediately realized it was the reason GreenVille had no wind.  He decided to call Professor Fusionstein to tell him what he’d discovered.  Professor Fusionstein couldn’t believe what GoGreen Man told him.

He asked GoGreen Man what it looked like.  “It has a lot of pressure – the wind is very strong and the center of the dam is bowing out.  It actually looks like it’s about to pop.  Whatever material is, it must be very strong to be able to block the wind.  I’m going to use my Greencopter to pierce the middle of it so I can release the wind.  Here, let me show you what the curtain looks like.” GoGreen Man turned on the video-cam in his Greencopter so he could show Professor Fusionstein what he was looking at.

When Professor Fusionstein saw the curtain, he told GoGreen Man to wait a minute while he thought about what to do.  He then told GoGreen Man, “It's a very dangerous plan because the curtain has a lot of pressure built up from blocking the wind.  It's like popping a balloon that's filled with air - when it is popped, a fast burst of air and loud noise comes out.  I don’t think the GreenCopter can handle it.”

In spite of Professor Fusionstein’s concerns, GoGreen Man decided he would cut the curtain to release the wind it was holding back from GreenVille.  He knew he had to do it in order to save GreenVille.  He prayed for wisdom, because it was a very dangerous mission. Just as he was about to puncture the curtain, Professor Fusionstein radioed him.  “Stop, GoGreen Man!” he ordered.  Professor Fusionstein told him that when the curtain popped, the wind would push him backwards, which was too dangerous.  Going backwards, he wouldn't have any control over his Greencopter and could, quite possibly, be blown into the side of a mountain (very scary!).  Professor Fusionstein told him that if he went to the other side of the curtain, he could pop it and be blown through with the wind. “GoGreen Man, it is still very dangerous because of the strong wind currents, but it is better than being blown backwards.  You’d have more control going from the other side.”

“You’re right, Professor Fusionstein,” said GoGreen Man.  “I’ll check out the conditions on the other side of the curtain.”

GoGreen Man then flew his Greencopter to the other side and was surprised to see that the wind was much stronger than he thought it would be.  Even if he could make it down, it would be almost impossible for him to control the Greencopter.  GoGreen Man, again, felt he had no choice; he had to do this for GreenVille.

Professor Fusionstein asked him, “What is the situation, GoGreen Man?”

“The wind is extremely strong and I think I’m going to have some difficulty controlling the Greencopter but, I think I can do it,” he told the professor.

“Good luck, GoGreen Man,” said Professor Fusionstein.  “Stay calm and focused – just be safe.”

With that encouragement, GoGreen Man pushed the controls on his Greencopter to go down into the wind.  Once down, the wind spun him around almost making him hit the side of a mountain.  GoGreen Man miraculously gained control of the Greencopter and quickly transformed it into a rocket shape with a spear at the end.   Using the Greencopter's green propulsion system and the force of the wind, GoGreen Man was able to shoot through the middle of the curtain.  With a loud POP and whoooooosh, the air was released.  GoGreen Man got the ride of his life as he flew with the rushing wind through the mountains and through the valley.  It was almost like surfing, riding the waves.

Because of GoGreen Man's courage, GreenVille was saved.  They got their wind back, but on top of that, the air released from the wind dam (the curtain) was so strong, it even blew away Gas Goon.  It was like the saying about killing two birds with one stone.  Gas Goon tried to resist, but how could it fight back when the force of the wind was so strong?!  With Gas Goon gone, the sun was now seen over GreenVille.

GreenVille's citizens were thrilled.  Everyone was coming outside to enjoy the sun and the clear blue sky. The sun was shining brightly and the wind turbines were spinning furiously.  GVTN was following GoGreen Man around and had recorded what he was doing.  The reporter told GreenVille that, “GoGreen Man’s acts have saved GreenVille.” This news spread all over and when the citizens saw the reports they started singing GoGreen Man's praises and saying how much they appreciated Mother Nature.   Everyone was celebrating and shouting with joy.

Everyone, that is, except Dr. Pollution and his followers.  He was shocked.  He had no idea how GoGreen Man was able to blow Gas Goon away.  Dr. Pollution then found out his wind dam had been discovered and destroyed.  It was the release of all the wind that blew Gas Goon away.  He was furious.  “I almost had GreenVille!  I was so close!  GoGreen Man, I’ll be back!”

Congressman Pol’ Tick Al still wouldn’t give up.  He was determined to push for the petro-gasonol power plant and went to King Nature to discuss his proposal.  “King Nature, even though GoGreen Man found a solution this time, we still need an alternate emergency backup plan,” he said.  “Something like this could happen again.”

“You’re right, Pol’ Tick Al.  We do need another backup emergency system.  Here, look at what Professor Fusionstein sent me,” King Nature calmly replied.  Showing Pol’ Tick Al the proposal, he continued, “It’s feasible and best of all, it’s completely renewable!  It’s called the Bubble E. Factory.”

Pol’ Tick Al couldn’t believe his eyes.  Instead of having a polluting power plant built, he had to witness yet another renewable energy power plant.  It was not a good day for Pol’ Tick Al.

***

King Nature planned a big celebration for GoGreen Man and Professor Fusionstein’s success.  City Hall was packed with well wishers and people who wanted to congratulate them and thank them for their hard work.

GoGreen Man was very humble and said, “I was just doing my job.  I will always do my best to protect GreenVille.”  Everyone cheered at that.  “Without Professor Fustionstein’s help, I couldn’t have done it.  He was a tremendous help to me.”  Again, every one cheered.

GreenVille was filled with joy and happiness.  They learned their lesson by realizing the importance of Mother Nature.

It’s not over though because Dr. Pollution will be back.
